Thread: Meta tag customization

    I'm not asking for SEO help, I'm just trying to find out if a list of meta keywords is actually better than a meta description for search engine display. I'm worried that it is not because the majority of other sites appear to use meta descriptions.

    Contradictory? You now know the file to change, 'tis up to you what you do with it.

    Adam,

    Have a look through this - it may shed some light on the matter: The meaning of all the different meta tags & how to use them | meta tags search engine promotion

    Regards.

    This page confirms that the meta description should be "A description of your website in 3 of 4 sentences."

    Why does oscmax make it a duplicate of the meta keywords?

    If it is best left as such then I'd be interested to understand why; and leave it alone. Otherwise, how would one go about setting up oscmax's meta description to be different than its meta keywords?

    I found a workaround, of sorts, for setting a logical meta description for your home page. In includes\meta_tags.php

    Find:

    Code:
    case CONTENT_INDEX_DEFAULT:
          define('META_TAG_TITLE', TITLE . PRIMARY_SECTION . $web_site_tagline);
        	define('META_TAG_DESCRIPTION', TITLE . PRIMARY_SECTION . SECONDARY_SECTION . WEB_SITE_KEYWORDS);
        	define('META_TAG_KEYWORDS', WEB_SITE_KEYWORDS);
          break;
    Replace with:

    Code:
    case CONTENT_INDEX_DEFAULT:
          define('META_TAG_TITLE', TITLE . PRIMARY_SECTION . $web_site_tagline);
        	define('META_TAG_DESCRIPTION', "Here you can enter your custom meta description for your home page so that it shows a description in search results and not just your list of keywords." . TITLE . PRIMARY_SECTION . SECONDARY_SECTION . WEB_SITE_KEYWORDS);
        	define('META_TAG_KEYWORDS', WEB_SITE_KEYWORDS);
          break;

    Angry Re: Meta tag customization

    Marking down my posts regarding this topic is just plain petty, when you consider ANY improvements discussed here provide a competitive advantage over other sites. This could be counter-productive some of us!
    Notwithstanding the above, I have attached an updated meta_tags hack, which not only improves the poor defaults (IMO) but also utilises the latent website tagline (seen in ZenCart). This hack builds on some of what I've been doing for my paying hosted clients and gives an Admin interface for the tagline (in Localisation, Languages).
    Those who take the effort to read the actual meta_tag.php file will, I'm sure, discover better ways of using the inbuilt features. I've labelled this hack version 1.0 and already see potential to use product short descriptions etc.

    Having used Header Tags SEO on an osCommerce site, I can say that is is just OK but lacks any real management (via EasyPopulate, for example) and is therefore limited. I'm not saying that it couldn't be improved but too many people don't just sit back and "see the bigger picture".
