How to stop Paypal sending emails when I update the order status?

It looks like Paypal is verifying each of the IPN-based payments each time I update its status. Each time it re-verifies, it sends an order update to the customer which is very confusing for them. Is there a way to change the orders status and not have the customer notified?

I think you just need to uncheck the "notify customer" checkbox next to the status dropdown button.
