Default Layout with transparent gifs vs. layout with CSS

OScommerce seems to lots of it layout with various little transparent gifs even though it also uses CSS (for fonts and colours, mostly). Why is this?
I'm currently stripping away many of those gifs and replacing them with a 0.5em margin in infoBoxContents but even that's some work as often infoBoxContents are needlessly nested and therefore the margins would pile up.

I still am really fond of OScommerce, though.

    Hi,

not sure but I think the transperant gifs and nested tables are there because CSS browser support wasn't very well when the code was written. The "old" osC layout probably even works well if NN4 is used as browser. If you use CSS for the layout better forget NN4.
