Hi everybody!
It turns out that I set up my tax zone (6% Connecticut state sales tax) correctly before I got here, according to a check against Betagirl's post.
But the reason I came here to post is that OSC is displaying the prices with tax for each of my products. For example: one product is set to class "Taxable Item", then Net price is set to 60.00. This results in an autofill of the Gross price to 106% of that amount, or 63.60. When that product is viewed from the store, even if user is not logged in, $63.60 is what is displayed.
I hope this is something simple that I am missing... :)
Turn off 'Display Prices with Tax' in the admin configuration >> my store section
I have a problem as well with my new store. In admin under locations/taxes I show:
Countries -all are listed in here
Zones -all are listed in here from Austria to the United States
Tax Zones -NYS
Tax Classes -taxable goods
Tax rates -NYS 8%
I live in NYS and any orders placed for NYS should be charged the sales tax. However, today I received an order from a Florida customer and it charged her the 8% sales tax! eek!
Why did it do that? What do I need to fix/correct/change so that it only charges NYS customers the appropriate tax. HELP!!!
Re-read and follow these instructions:

Ohhhhhh -you know I read that already and yet it didn't click to me until just now.
"you only create the zone for the state you want to charge tax in"
That must mean I have to delete all other countries/zones listed under the "zones" section -so that only United States, New York shows. They came preloaded in the store and so I assumed they all stayed there -I'll go ahead and delete all other zones but the one I need.
Thanks Michael.
One more question, if I have slightly different tax rates for a few NYS counties -where/how do I enter those?
disregard this post -sorry...guess I hadn't had enough coffee yet. I missed a whole section of the instructions. everything is in working order. thanks!
okay well I guess I presumed all would work out. I went and did exactly what the instructions say and I created a test customer from florida and when I add items to the cart for that test florida customer -it's still charging them 8% sales tax for NYS.
What could be causing this problem?
Initially I thought maybe it was because for each product I marked it as taxable goods. But I tested an item that was not marked taxable goods and it still charged the tax.
What can I do to fix this? Any suggestions????![]()

The only thing causing the problem is that you did not set up everything per the instructions. I am not sure where your troubles are coming from.
1. Under Tax Zones Create your State tax zone.
2. Click the Details button of your created zone and select United States and New York
Under Tax Rates
3. Select your Tax Class
4. Select your Zone, it should already be selected as New York, but if not select it.
5. Put the % tax in
6. Add a description.
7. Set priority to 1 or leave blank.
Works perfectly every store I do it on... Only charges tax where I set up the zone to charge tax. Follow step by step and it will work for you. These steps leave no room for interpretation. Do it exactly and it will work.
Ok, here's the deal. We all need to get together and pay betagirl to write the complete new manual for this puppy. However, I have a feeling we cannot afford her rates. Excellent and very helpful - Thanks !

thanks for the explanation. I did get this configured in the admin and it seems to be calculating tax correctly.
However, it also seems to be adding tax to items when the shipping address is in my home state, instead of the billing address. I was thinking that it should calculate sales tax based on the billing address.
