Default accent mark in name supresses that line is ship to address

I am running osCmax 2.5.4 A customer entered his company name in the "first name" field, and his whole name in the "last name" field.
When you display the order, the first line of ship to is just a blank area. So, both first name and last name fields did not print out on the order detail page. In each position (customer, ship to and billing), it was just blank.

He entered this as first name : Microcube Srl

The letter after S is an a with some accent, it displays as a black diamond with a white question mark in it, on my Ubuntu system with Firefox browser.

This caused some trouble at the Swiss post office.

Any suggestions if this is an easy fix? I do know that FedEx and USPS APIs throw a fit if there is any accent mark in the address, so they do need to be filtered out when requesting the rate quote.

    Thanks,

    Jon

Yeah, that is annoying, you have to strip all the accents automatically while the customer is entering them. It can be done - I just can't recall how we did it...and a bit busy at the moment. Do a search on these forums for the answer - I am pretty sure that the answer is here somewhere. If not then search the osCommerce forums as this problem shows up there too.

This is due to character sets and has/does still cause me grief in different areas of stores - I have an email one just now with £ (GBP) that I just haven't found time for.
Look at the catalog/includes/languages/english/locale/locale.php , plus the character set of your SQL db can be problematic if it doesn't match. I remember using a specific ISO char. set for Irish names, for example. A lot of US-centric sites use ISO_8859-1 which doesn't help (limited accented characters). UTF-8/UTF-16 is where everything should be focused but computing language translations have always been messy, IME.
Example: utf 8 - What is the difference between UTF-8 and ISO-8859-1? - Stack Overflow

I really wish I could put together a definitive guide. Takes me back over 30 years. :-/

Our problem is Canada Post and probably FedEx hates accents (and French is our other official language!). So addresses get corrupted all sorts of ways when characters outside of standards are used. I think I found a cure, but can't recall what it was. I do know this topic has come up before a few years back and I outlined at the time (AIR) what I did to 'fix' it...or maybe not. No time to help right now though, so I suggest the OP hunt through this forum and try other search terms - something about "corrupted address" for example...
