USPS Shipping method oscmax 2.5.4 not showing method descriptions

It looks like my USPS shipping module from oscmax 2.5.4 is functioning although it is not posting the names of the services in the cart, instead it shows "------". For example, shipping options for USPS on a .1lb item show like this in my cart:

United States Postal Service
Service United States Postal Service

------Approx. delivery time 1 Day $3.00

------Approx. delivery time 1 Day $6.65


United Parcel Service (1 x 0.11lbs) United Parcel Service
3 Day Select $15.70
Ground $12.36

I have first class and priority mail enabled. I had express enabled and it also showed as "------".

In searching the forums here and at oscommerce it seems it's not too uncommon for USPS to change the names of their services or their API. I've been looking at the oscommerce USPS Rate V4, Intl Rate V2 module which implies a fix for these issues. I tried uninstalling my USPS module and installing this oscommerce module but it didn't make any changes that I could tell.

Does anyone have any pointers on cleaning up USPS shipping module in my oscmax 2.5.4 installation?

That's certainly the module that I use for my clients, though USPS screws stuff up on a regular basis, just because they can and customers don't seem to complain enough to them! [/rant]
Work your way through the long thread, taking in plenty of caffeine or whatever keeps you awake/focussed.
Beware of duplication of USPS records in your configuration table - a common cause for 'things not working'.
