Default Sort Order by Price

Two issues-

1) how to set default sort order of products to asc by "field value" (i.e. "specials price")?
2) when you choose sort option by "price low to high" from the drop down price it appears to not work properly.

OK...after some digging around I have figured that the default sort order is MSRP when there is a value for that. I need a way to have the default sort order be the "specials price" And need the dropdown sort option box to return the same results when price low to high is selected. Intuitively customers would expect the prices to sort by what they are NOW not what they could compare at or what the normal price was.
