timeout for USPS ?

Does anyone know how to have the USPS module timeout like the FedEx module does if it doesn't get a reply back from the USPS server? Many of my international customers report that my web store "locks up" when the click the checkout button. I have traced this to the USPS module, if I turn it off then I get the shipping page.
It works for domestic shipping and sporadically for international.

Any other hints for making the USPS module work more reliably, or pointers to an update for it would be greatly welcomed. I think I'm running USPS methods 4_3_0
